underarm boils

Underarm boils, more commonly known as Furuncles, can be a very painful affliction. While most boils are not easy to get rid off, underarm boils are probably the worst, because of their location. In most cases, underarm boils are the result of an infection that attacks the hair follicles in the underarm region. A certain bacteria known as Staphylococcus is constantly present on the surface of your skin. When these bacteria make their way into the hair follicles under your arm, it leads to underarm boils. Once the bacteria invade the underarm hair follicle, they cause a pus-like fluid to buildup. Underarm boils are often accompanied by redness, swelling, irritation and soreness in the area. In certain cases, underarm boils need to be drained, or surgically removed, by a professional doctor. However, there are several steps you can take at home, to maximize your comfort, in spite of the underarm boils:
  • The application of heat to the underarm area would soothe the skin and reduce the pain. Apply some heat to the area by boiling some water and dipping a clean washcloth into it. You may not be able to lift the cloth with your bare hands and may use a pair of clean, sterilized tongs instead. Wring out the excess water from the cloth and then place it, like a compress, on the boil. Leave the cloth on, till it gets cools. You could also use a hot water bag or bottle in place of a washcloth. In order to prevent burning, you can place a towel between your skin and the bottle.
  • Cut a raw onion into thick slices and place them over the underarm boils. Cover the onion slices with a gauze pad and use medical tape to hold them in place. Onion has antiseptic properties and can help drain underarm boils naturally. Keep the onion on, till the boil comes to a head, making sure that you change the slices every 3 hours.
  • Add some cornmeal to half a cup of boiled water, to make a thick paste. Apply the cornmeal paste directly on the underarm boils and over them with a gauze pad. Repeat this exercise every two hours, so that the boil comes to a head.
While the home remedies for underarm boils or furuncles treatment may help alleviate the pain and discomfort to some extent, it is best to get the boils checked by a doctor, to avoid the possibility of an infection.
