trapped wind
Trapped wind is a condition in which gases begin to accumulate inside the gastro intestinal tract but the system does not become flatulent to release these gases. Trapped wind could cause abdominal discomfort and bloating. This is in fact, one of the major causes of bloating in people.
Trapped wind is often referred to as trapped intestinal gas. This usually causes discomfort. However, the amount of trapped wind in the body is directly proportional to the discomfort experienced by the suffering person. Fortunately, most episodes of trapped wind are extremely short and may get resolved on their own. This is perhaps why medically this is not considered a dangerous condition. The condition itself receives very less attention from people all over the world.
Trapped wind is usually caused when too much of air is swallowed while eating. Anxiety and overeating are some of the other causes of trapped wind. If indigested food is present in the body for a long time, it begins to ferment in the gut, and the action of the bacteria causes a release of gases which are then not expelled from the body, causing a bout of trapped wind.
Trapped wind is usually characterized by a sudden fullness usually experienced after rushing through a particular meal. Sometimes, eating certain gas inducing foods can also cause trapped wind. You may feel like letting the wind pass, but the body is unable to comply. This is often accompanied with rumbling sounds from the stomach. If the wind remains trapped in the body for a long period of time, it may even become difficult for the person to walk properly.
Usually the condition is completely harmless, even if the pain associated with it may be excruciating or debilitating. Gases can be trapped in the stomach, the small intestine or the large intestine. Flatulence would easily cure this problem and therefore the primary treatment for this condition is the induction of flatulence. If a person is able to release the wind, the condition can be resolved without any specific complications.
Apart from medications, yoga can also help in inducing flatulence. The pavanmuktasana or the wind release pose of yoga would help in inducing flatulence and relieving the symptoms of the trapped wind condition. If you have persisting episodes of trapped wind and the resulting pain, it is recommended that you get yourself checked by a doctor for any signs of irritable bowel syndrome or bowel obstruction.
