thrush

Thrush is a yeast infection which is caused in the mouth due to a fungus known as candida. Though thrush is mainly an infection of the mouth, it can spread to other parts of the body as well. In fact, the diaper rash experienced by babies and vaginal infections in women is also due to thrush, the yeast infection.
Though anyone can suffer from thrush, it is mostly babies, toddlers and older adults who suffer from it. People who have a weak immune system are also more prone to developing a thrush infection.

Causes of Thrush
Thrush is usually caused by the bacteria present in the mouth, skin and the digestive tract. Usually these do not cause any problems in healthy people. However, if a person has a weak immune system, the yeast can multiply fast and affect the body. Autoimmune diseases, chronic diseases like cancers, pregnancy, strong medications, steroids and uncontrolled diabetes are some of the other causes of thrush.

Symptoms of Thrush
Though thrush almost always develops suddenly, it may become chronic in certain cases as well. One of the commonest symptoms of thrush is the presence of a raised lesion which appears white and passes a creamy colored discharge. The lesion is usually very painful and may even bleed at times. If the lesions are formed in the mouth, they can spread to the interior of the mouth and even the esophagus if timely intervention is not made. With the spread of the infection, a person may also begin to run a slight fever.

Home Remedies for Thrush
The extract of grapefruit seed is the best remedy for thrush. The extract of the grapefruit seeds has chemicals which act as potent anti microbial agents. This extract works as a natural antibiotic. You can consume one teaspoon of the grapefruit seed extract along with a lukewarm glass of water twice a day; and in a week, you will see a change in your symptoms.

Raw coconut oil, which has not yet been refined, is another excellent home remedy for thrush. The coconut oil contains a compound known as caprylic acid which is a strong anti microbial agent. Applying a small amount of raw coconut oil on the areas of the body where thrush has caused its symptoms, would help in the treatment of the symptoms. This virgin coconut oil is the best remedy for children and is excellent for diaper rashes as well as thrush rashes on the mouth.
