swollen finger

Human hands have five digits each which are themselves made up of a few bones. The bone joints allow the fingers to be moved in such a way that one can hold things or make a fist. In order to make the fingers move, there are many different muscles that work simultaneously. A swelling is a medical condition that involves the enlargement of a part of the body to a size that is larger than normal for that part of the body. Swelling is sometimes associated with an injury response. It may also be a problem related to the circulation of blood and other body fluids. A swelling is generally diagnostically relevant. When a part of the body is injured, a swelling could indicate damage to the bones around that area.

A swollen finger usually indicates some form of injury. Fluid buildup usually does not affect the fingers. A swollen finger might indicate some form of infection that has affected the finger as well. This type of infection can affect the pulp space or even the flexor of the finger. An inflammation without any sign of injury may be associated with an infection rather than an injury. When one suffers from a swollen finger it is advisable to visit a doctor. If there has been some injury, then one might have a fracture of the bones in the finger. This can be checked to some extent at home. If movement of the digit is impossible without great pain, one can assume that a fracture has occurred. A formal diagnosis of this condition would only be made in a laboratory, using an X-ray machine.

A swollen finger can be quite painful and would make normal daily tasks difficult to perform. An individual suffering from this sort of trauma may need some remedy to help use the finger. Typically when there is a swelling, cold is used to reduce the inflammation. Cold temperatures help to compress the wound, and also provide some relief. For injuries, this is the best solution. Under doctor’s advice, one may be allowed to use anti-inflammatory medication as well as this might help to further reduce the inflammation in the hand. It may be necessary to immobilize a swollen finger. This can be done with the help of a splint which can hold the finger in place with the help of the nearby digits. This may be necessary when the injury gets worsened by repeated impacts on the affected area.
