stuffed up nose

The nasal system is a set of tubes that passes around the head of an individual. The nose is connected to the throat and the windpipe. It is therefore also connected to the mouth from the back of the oral and nasal cavities. The ears are connected to the nasal system through the Eustachian tubes. This connection allows the ears to maintain a balance between the external and internal air pressure. These passages also allow the vibration of the ear membrane to take place.

A stuffed up nose is the result of the accumulation of mucus in the nasal passage. This happens when there is an infection in the nasal system. When an infection affects the membranes in the nose, the body begins to produce mucus. This mucus is meant to trap the infection which can then be expelled from the body. During such a condition, the individual would need to regularly blow his or her nose. A stuffed up nose is often annoying as it hinders normal breathing, often forcing an individual to breathe from his or her mouth. A stuffed up nose also changes the tone of an individual’s voice making it sound more nasal than normal.
There are many ways with which one can get over a stuffed up nose. One technique, known as steam inhalation, is extremely effective. Steam inhalation is done with a bowl of boiled water. As the water cools, it lets off steam which is inhaled by the individual. The individual can place his or her face under a towel which forms a tent over the steaming bowl of water.

Care should be taken to avoid burning the eyes and the skin on the face. Regular breaks are required to prevent this from happening. The water may be infused with eucalyptus oil to provide some extra relief. After a session of steam inhalation, the individual should attempt to blow his or her nose. This can remove any mucus that has been loosened by the process of steam inhalation. It may be advisable to avoid cold drinks during this period. Warm teas infused with various medicinal herbs may be helpful when one is recovering from a stuffed up nose. There are also some nasal decongestants that can be used to clear up the nose. Vapor rubs can be applied to the nose and the chest. These rubs are medicated and help to provide some relief from a stuffed up nose.
