stopped up ears
Stopped up ears is a common problem, that is caused by a number of factors, the most common one being a buildup of a ear wax plug. Ear wax refers to the sticky substance present in the ears that prevents debris from entering them. However, at times, there could be an excessive buildup of ear wax, which could occur due to an infection or even for no apparent reason, leading to stopped up ears. This buildup of ear wax can lead to ear pain, hearing loss, difficulty in swallowing and a ringing sensation in the ears. In case the pain in the stopped up ears is too intense, it is best to visit a doctor as soon as possible. However, mild cases of stopped up ears are not really an emergency and can be dealt with, using simple home remedies, or over the counter products available at most drug stores. Given below are some common ways of clearing stopped up ears:
- Splash a small amount of warm water in your ear and tip your head in a way that the opposite ear rests on the shoulder and the ear with the wax buildup points in the air. Hold your head in this position for 10 to 15 seconds. After that lean over the sink and allow the water to flow out of the ear.
- Never try to pull put the wax using a cotton bud, as you will only push the wax further into the ears. Moreover, if you use the cotton bud inappropriately, you could damage your eardrum. Instead, pour a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, with the help of a sterile eye dropper, to clean out your ear. Lie down on one side with the affected ear on top and pour a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into the ear. You will hear a bubbling sound, which is normal. Wait for the bubbling sound to subside and then turn over, allowing the hydrogen peroxide to drip out. You should see small pieces of ear wax mixed with the hydrogen peroxide. Use another dropper to flush the liquid out of your ears, with the help of rubbing alcohol.
- There are several ear drops and ear wax irrigators that can be used to get rid of the buildup of ear wax. However, you need to follow the instructions for each product very carefully, to avoid adverse side effects.
In case you try to clear the stopped up ears without any success, it is best to visit a doctor and preferably an ear specialist.
