The term spotting is used to describe a condition in women where blood spots are found in the underwear of an individual. These blood spots are found during times other than while menstruating. Bleeding during menstruation is absolutely normal and is not a cause for concern unless it is excessive. A woman who is experiencing spotting during other times of the month may be suffering from some condition which needs to be looked at. Spotting may not cause marks to appear on the underwear. The detection of spots in this case, occurs when the genital area is wiped using a toilet paper after urination. The color of the spotting is also significant. Light pink spots are associated with extremely small quantities of blood. Bright red spots indicate that the blood is fresh and may be a result of a condition that is ongoing. Brown colored spotting is a result of dried or oxidized blood. Brown spotting may be a sign of no problem at all as it is possible that some blood may be left in the vagina after the previous menstruation. Spotting after sexual intercourse may also be normal, particularly if the intercourse was painful or excessively rough. It is also considered to be normal if spotting occurs up to three days after the last menstruation has ended.
With all these conditions considered, one can judge whether spotting experienced by the woman is relevant or not. If there is no obvious cause for spotting then the woman must visit a doctor for a thorough examination to understand the underlying cause of the problem. In some cases, spotting may occur when a fertilized egg has implanted itself in the uterus wall. The egg burrows itself into the lining and may cause some mild bleeding in the process. A woman who has been sexually active around the time when she is fertile need not worry if there is mild spotting for a day in the middle of the cycle. This can be used as an early sign that pregnancy might have occurred.
A common cause for spotting that is prolonged is progesterone deficiency. When the level of progesterone is low, the woman may experience spotting as progesterone is required to maintain the uterine lining. Progesterone levels tend to dip before menstruation to allow the uterus wall to shed and be discarded. Low progesterone can cause lengthy periods of spotting, infertility and miscarriages.
