remedies for growing hair

The scalp and hair beauty market is full of products promising you shiny, healthy, rich growth of hair. While there is no permanent cure to reverse baldness, there are various medical treatment options and home remedies for growing hair or slowing the hair loss.

Causes of hair loss

It is normal to find some hair fall every time you comb or wash your hair. In fact, studies reveal that on an average you lose about 50 to 100 strands per day. This should not set the alarm bells ringing. However, if you find that your hair loss exceeds this number, is patchy, or the hair is falling out in clumps, it may be time to consult a doctor. Hair loss can sometimes be a symptom of a more severe medical condition and it is best to diagnose it thoroughly.

You may also suffer from hair loss with a change in water (hard water tends to make hair brittle) or a change in weather conditions. Hair loss may also occur if your hair reacts unfavorably to a product, through excessive use of hair products, and lack of care for colored hair or other extreme styling trends.

Stress is a huge cause of hair loss as well. Poor nutrition and inadequate intake of protein or iron in your diet could also cause hair thinning. Crash dieting could also cause hair loss due to the lack of nutrition in your diet. Semi or complete baldness could occur due to medication or its side effects, medical conditions, or plain hereditary hair loss.

Remedies for growing hair

Healthy hair is an outward sign of good physical health. A well balanced diet, regular exercise and hair care regimen can guarantee luxurious hair. Here are some additional home remedies for growing hair and for improving the quality of thinning hair.

  • One of the most important remedies for growing hair is regulating your diet. The building blocks of your hair are proteins called keratin. Include lean meats, fresh seafood and egg whites in your diet for a daily supply of proteins to your body. Vitamins and minerals also play an important role in healthy hair. Vitamin B-complex from fruits and vegetables and iron from leafy foods like spinach, kale, and chards help the growth of hair and provide lustre.
  • Flattened beer works as a great conditioner as it adds volume and shine to your hair.  The proteins in the malt and the hops in the beer replenish your hair. Use it after a shampoo and let soak for three to five minutes. Wash it off with warm water.
  • Essential oils like lavender, jojoba, grape seed, thyme, rosemary, and basil are also useful remedies for growing hair. Create your own hair spa by mixing these essential oils with your regular almond or olive hair oil and give yourself a soothing massage. Follow aromatherapy instructions for mixing or applying certain concentrated essential oils.
  • Squeeze out freshly grated coconut milk. Massage it in circles on your scalp for a cool, soothing effect. Coconut milk helps to cleanse the scalp and remove any blockage around the hair follicles. This is one of the most widely used remedies for growing hair.
  • Eliminate or reduce stress from your life. Take time out to exercise. Blood circulation is important for hair growth.
  • It is important to practice hair hygiene regularly. Do not let hair products stay on your hair for long periods. Shampoo and condition regularly. For daily use, try milder hair products. When styling your hair, use good quality hair products. Excessive blow-drying can damage your hair and leave you with split ends.
