The skin on the human body is made up of many layers. Throughout the day, the top layer of skin is exposed to foreign objects and infections. The layers allow the skin to effectively fight off these infections. One of the normal processes of the human body is the gradual shedding of skin. Most of the time, this happens without the individual even noticing. The top layer of skin gradually flakes off and is replaced by the layer just below it. This allows the skin to continuously regenerate itself. Peeling skin is a condition where the skin is damaged and is therefore peeling off much faster than it normally would. Peeling hands is a condition that occurs on the skin of the hands and the skin behind the palms. The skin of the palms is different and does not flake off as it is harder and is designed for continuous and rough use.
Peeling hands may be a result of excessive exposure to the sun which has caused the skin to be sunburned. The damaged skin gradually peels off and is replaced by skin below it. Often, many layers of skin need to peel off one by one before the skin returns to its original color and the peeling stops. Peeling may also be a result of some infection in the body which is affecting the structural integrity of the skin. If the cause of the skin damage is obvious, then over-the-counter treatments for peeling hands may be effective. However, if the skin starts peeling without any obvious cause, it is essential to visit a doctor for a diagnosis. This is because of the range of different problems that can cause peeling hands and peeling skin. Skin dryness may also cause peeling to occur. When one exposes oneself to water for an extended period, the skin tends to be wrinkled. Some people with weak skin may experience skin peeling after this exposure. This is one of the causes of peeling hands because when one is washing dishes, the abrasion and water exposure may cause peeling skin.
If the cause is mild or temporary, like exposure to the sun, then the condition can be cured easily using creams available at home. If there is an underlying cause, then the doctor will administer the necessary treatment through antiviral or antibiotic medications. Peeling skin caused by exposure to the sun tends to cure itself over a period of a few weeks. It is important for the patient to be properly hydrated during this period.
