There are millions of bacteria that have taken up residence in the tiny space between your gums and teeth. Therefore, in spite of following the most strict oral hygiene regime, it is quite possible for a person to suffer from swollen gums and gum infections. As the bacteria in the teeth grow they form a thin film over the gum line and the teeth. This film is known as plaque, and this could lead to gingivitis. Gingivitis has the tendency to develop into a troublesome gum disease over a period of time. There are several commercial oral health care products that claim to prevent gum disease and swollen gums. However, at times, the use of such products can actually lead to gum related problems. Therefore it is best to adopt a natural cure for swollen gums instead.
- Apply some baking soda on your toothbrush and brush your teeth with that. This may hurt the gum a bit, but as it is an effective treatment for swollen gums. This should be a continuous process and therefore should not be stopped after the goal is achieved.
- Use a strong solution of hydrogen peroxide as a mouth rinse and gargle thoroughly with it.
- Take a clean and sterilized dropper, filled with either goldenseal, or propolis extract. Pour the entire mixture from the dropper into your mouth and swish the liquid around for around half a minute or so before swallowing it.
- Alternately, instead of using goldenseal, you could gargle with colloidal silver, before swallowing it. Both goldenseal, as well as colloidal silver are natural and potent antibiotics.
- Take clean and sterilized Q tips or cotton buds and use them to massage your gums lightly. Alternately, you can use a ribbed finger massager, made of rubber and put it over your index finger for a better massage. This may hurt a bit initially, but is a natural cure for swollen gums and therefore is necessary. After massaging your gum disinfect the area, by gargling with hydrogen peroxide.
- Mix some black pepper powder in clove oil and apply it to the swollen gum.
Apart from using the natural cure for swollen gums, it is important to follow strict hygienic measures. Dietary changes may also be necessary while dealing with swollen gums. Foods that are high in sugar, like sweets, chocolate, pastries, soft drinks and so on, should be strictly avoided. However, in case you do not see any relief from swollen gums in a few days, it is best to consult a dentist for proper medication.
