Toothache home remedies

My sympathies are with you. Toothaches can be quite painful. One of the most effective remedies for a toothache is clove oil. You can soak a handkerchief or a cotton ball in clove oil and hold it against your aching tooth. If clove oil is not readily available, chewing on a clove will help to some extent. Chewing on garlic will also help, even if it gives you awful breath.

You can also numb the area with some ice. Ice will calm the inflamed nerve endings and give you relief from the pain. However, if for any reason the pain gets worse after this treatment, discontinue it immediately. Swishing either Vanilla or Almond extract around in your mouth for a few minutes will have the same effect, because both contain high levels of alcohol. If an underlying infection is causing the toothache, you should rinse your mouth out with hydrogen peroxide.

Try sleeping with your head elevated, so there is less pressure on your head. If none of these remedies give you more than minimal relief, take an OTC medication such as Acetaminophen. You should consult a doctor if your toothache does not go away in 2 days or if it is accompanied by a high fever.

Simply put, toothache is a warning signal that all is not okay with the tooth. What is concerning is that there is more pain when you apply pressure, which would indicate the likelihood of an infection or what is also known as an abscess  under the tooth.  What you can do to alleviate the pain topically is apply clove oil, remember that this is only really going to help if you have a fairly large cavity; and you can do this by using a cotton bud or cotton wool soaking in a few drops of the oil and pack it to the area before you make it to the dentist. Remember to read the directions on the bottle before using.

If your dentist does advise that you have an abscess then you can take an herbal antibiotic that will boost your immune system and the pain will subside as the infection resides. A good herbal remedy for abscesses is:

Echinacea     15ml fluid extracts
Calendula     15ml fluid extract
Fenugreek    15ml fluid extract
Poke Root     5ml fluid extract
Dose: 1-2ml three times daily –

NOTE: it is also vital that you seek the advice of a qualified dental practitioner at the earliest opportunity as a toothache will rarely subside on its own and can often get rapidly worse.
