Lost voice or loss of voice is also referred to as laryngitis. It is an annoying and discomforting problem that occurs due to inflammation of the vocal cords. There are various causes and symptoms of lost voice.
The most common cause of laryngitis is overuse of the vocal cords due to shouting or yelling. Infections such as common cold, diphtheria, measles and mumps can also lead to lost voice. Individuals who smoke excessively may commonly experience inflammation of the vocal cords. Some of the more serious causes of lost voice include inhalation of chemical fumes, GERD or gastro esophageal diseases and chronic sinusitis. Infections by bacteria would also contribute to this condition. These infections include vocal cord paralysis and throat cancer. Laryngitis may be accompanied by certain other symptoms in most cases. Such symptoms include soreness of the throat, hoarseness, discomfort while swallowing or speaking, mucus in the throat, swelling around the voice box and fever. Some individuals may also experience trouble while breathing. Given below are some natural remedies for lost voice.
If laryngitis has occurred due to overuse, adequate rest of the vocal cords is essential. You may also do steam inhalation for a soothing effect on the throat. This also helps to alleviate irritation and soreness in the throat as it loosens the accumulated mucus and relaxes the membranes of the throat. Another very popular and effective remedy for throat problems is gargling with a solution of salt and warm water. Gargling with this solution thrice daily will help to relieve the symptoms of laryngitis. It is necessary to drink adequate water so that the throat remains well hydrated. Consume at least eight to ten glasses of water each day. Chewing on throat lozenges is another way to treat lost voice. It is advisable to avoid consuming alcohol and caffeinated beverages as these many aggravate the condition. Alcohol dries out the throat and therefore worsens the symptoms. Also avoid smoking as cigarette as smoke is an irritant for the throat. It will also prevent healing of a sore throat. Garlic is known to possess antibiotic properties and hence it is advisable to incorporate garlic into the diet. Ginger, too, is effective in alleviating throat discomfort. Ginger pieces may be boiled in water to prepare a soothing tea. It is also anti-inflammatory in nature and hence helps to treat the inflamed vocal cords. In case the condition persists for a long duration of time, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
