losing your voice
The ability to speak is one of the unique features that differentiate human beings from animals. Speech is important for various social applications and helps human beings communicate with one another. Most animals have some sort of ability to communicate using sounds but these abilities are not believed to be as developed as in humans.
Human beings have a set of vocal cords or vocal folds. These allow the air being passed over them to be modulated. This creates a sound which is what humans use to speak. Women tend to have smaller sized folds than men which explains why, in general, a woman’s voice has a higher pitch than a man’s voice. The term ‘losing one’s voice’ refers to a condition where the vocal cords or the throat itself is damaged or worn out due to some condition or due to over-exertion.
An individual may be exposed to chemicals or smoke that causes an irritation in the throat. This can change the pitch of the air passing by the vocal cords and affect the ability of an individual to speak properly. Infections by bacteria and viruses may also render this area inflamed or irritated. A person who has recently screamed loudly may also suffer from damage to his or her vocal ability. This type of damage is related to the cords being worn out rather than infected. This wearing out of cords may also cause inflammations. When it comes to losing your voice, any of these above mentioned situations can occur. A combination of these factors can also be occur which can result in you losing your voice.
There are many ways in which you can avoid losing your voice. The most common remedy after losing your voice is the use of hot water gargling. The water should be hot but not hot enough to scald or burn the mouth and throat. The use of salt in the water is recommended as this can help to increase the effectiveness of the procedure. Gargling soothes the throat and helps it recover quickly. The use of throat lozenges is also recommended for you if you are losing your voice. Lozenges are mildly medicated and often contain substances that provide a mild numbness. This numbness can help reduce inflammation and the sensation of irritation in the throat as well. Some traditional spices may help with loss of voice. These include garlic and turmeric, both of which are known to soothe the throat.
