lip discoloration
At times people complain of their lip changing color from pink or red to darker shades. This condition is nothing to be alarmed about, as it is by no means fatal in any way. It can occur in both men and women and is not age-specific. Lips can lose their original color due to several reasons. Lips may change color as a result of some disease, certain medication the person may have taken, or chemotherapy. At times, there may be several, small brownish-black spots scattered around the lips. This is a hereditary disease known, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. If the condition is hereditary, then complete cure is not always possible. However, certain remedies can be used to lighten the lips partially. Most often lip discoloration occurs due to chewing tobacco, excessive smoking, too much lip licking, unnecessary lip biting, excessive use of fluoride, applying cosmetics of inferior quality, ill-fitting dentures, unhealthy eating and drinking habits, or lengthy exposure to sun.
There are several remedies that can treat lip discoloration. The most effective of these, has proved to be lime application. Lime works as natural bleach; it gets rid to any brown stains and patches that may have formed on the lips. Lime juice can be applied to the lips at night. It is important to remember that lime has acidic properties; hence prolonged use of this can be counterproductive. Another helpful remedy for lip discoloration is by applying a dash of clarified butter to the lips. Instead of clarified butter, petroleum jelly can also be used. These will also help in preventing dryness and keep the lips from getting chapped. Fresh rose petals mixed with milk cream may also be helpful. This brings back the lip’s pinkness and also serves as a source of nourishment. Another natural remedy, used by many, is to mix a little saffron to a fresh cream paste. This paste helps to reduce any dark spots on the lips. Many use cocoa butter to treat their darkened lips. Cucumber extracts also have been known to act as natural bleaching agents, which help to lighten any darkened sections of the lip. Darkened lips can also be treated with honey. Another known application involves preparing a mixture of glycerin, castor oil, and lime juice. This should be applied and left on overnight for it to successfully treat lip discoloration. Caffeinated drinks and smoking should be avoided as they further darken lips. Most importantly, it is essential that you drink plenty of water throughout the day.
