laryngitis

Laryngitis refers to a condition that affects the larynx or the voice box. Due to irritation or infection, the voice box may become inflamed. This condition may last for only a few days, or it could persist for a longer duration of time. The vocal cords are located inside the voice box. Therefore when there is inflammation or infection of the voice box, the voice changes. Other symptoms of laryngitis may also occur such as soreness and dryness of the throat. The individual may also experience a ticklish sensation in the throat and the voice may become hoarse and rough. In some cases, the voice may become barely audible. There may also be a raw feeling in the throat and a dry cough. Laryngitis in children may be accompanied by difficulties in breathing. Congestion of the throat and an urge to clear the throat constantly may also occur.

Acute cases of laryngitis could be caused by conditions such as cold and other viral infections, overuse of the voice, mumps, diphtheria and measles. Chronic laryngitis is known to occur as a result of smoking, sinusitis and inhalation of chemicals or allergens. GERD or gastro esophageal reflux disease and alcohol abuse are also causes of laryngitis. In some cases, infections may also be responsible for inflammation of the larynx. Fungal and bacterial infections and infections by parasites could contribute to laryngitis. Another rare cause of laryngitis is vocal cord paralysis.

Laryngitis can be treated at home with natural remedies. In many cases laryngitis occurs as a result on conditions such as cold, strep throat and flu. Therefore in such cases, the treatment will depend on the cause. For example, in case of the common cold, the individual would require remedies such as steam inhalation to relieve inhalation. In cases of overuse of the vocal cords, simply resting the voice is adequate for relieving the condition. Most people tend to whisper when they experience laryngitis. However this must be avoided as it can aggravate the inflammation of the voice box since it involves more strain on the larynx as compared to normal talking. It is advisable to breathe through the nose when affected by laryngitis as this prevents exposure of the throat to cold air. Keeping the throat hydrated is also important and hence consuming plenty of water is beneficial. You may also consume a drink of warm water, honey and lemon juice. This helps to soothe the throat and relieve soreness.
