The problem of itchy lips is quite a common one in people of all ages and can occur due to various reasons. While this condition is not exactly serious, it can cause a lot of discomfort to the person affected. The most common causes of itchy lips are deficiency of vitamins, allergies and allergic reactions, certain skin conditions like cheilitis, lack of hygiene, cold and dry climates, pollution or other underlying medical conditions. The most common symptoms that accompany itchy lips are puffy, dry and cracked lips. In order to ascertain the exact cause of itchy lips in each case, it is important to observe the symptoms carefully.
Most cases of itchy lips are the result of allergic reactions to certain foods, drinks, cosmetics and drugs. At times, you could display a sudden allergic reaction to foods or beverages that you have been consuming for a long time. You can figure out which food or beverage you are allergic to, by avoiding the things that you ate shortly before the itchy lips problem and then watching the symptoms carefully for a while. Once you know which food you are allergic to, you will need to avoid it, altogether, to cure your itchy lips. In case you are taking any medication or drugs, it may be best to inform your doctor about the itchy lips, as the allergic reaction could be towards the medication. Never discontinue or change your medication, without checking with your doctor first.
However in case the condition does not improve even after avoiding foods, beverages or drugs, then you may need to change the brand of cosmetics that you are using. You may either opt for another brand of cosmetics or you could look for other alternatives that suit your skin, since most cosmetics contain chemicals that could trigger off allergies.
Unfortunately, the weather condition and pollution are also known to cause itchy lips. You can deal with this by covering your skin appropriately and taking certain preventative measures. Always wash your face with cold water, after you spend time outdoors, to remove the dirt and irritants from your skin. Also, you need to keep your lips moisturized at all times, with the help of petroleum jelly or a suitable lip balm. Make sure that you drink a lot of water throughout the day, to keep your body well hydrated. In case you have the habit of smoking, it is best to quit, as smoking would aggravate the problem of itchy lips.
In case you do not see any relief from itchy lips, in spite of following preventative measures, it may be best to consult a dermatologist or a doctor.
