how to get rid of an ear infection

‘Otitis media’ or an ear infection is the inflammation of the middle ear. The outer, the middle, and the inner ear form the 3 parts of the ear. The middle ear is situated behind your eardrum. In an ear infection, the area usually infected is between the end of the outer ear and the inner ear. This also includes the Eustachian tube. Middle ear infections are the result of respiratory infections such as a cold or sore throat. Colds can cause the Eustachian tube to swell up and get blocked. Due to this blockage, a thick fluid, also known as mucus, starts to accumulate in the Eustachian tubes and the middle ear. During this time, it may be difficult to hear sounds clearly. Furthermore, bacteria or viruses get trapped in the fluid; and the body begins to produce chemicals that fight these germs. Production of these chemicals increases the swelling. As the swelling increases, it begins to push against the ear drum; which, turns red and painful. This eventually may cause the ear drum to burst and a thick yellowish fluid comes out of the ear. This greatly lessens the pain and the tear in the ear drum usually heals in a few days. There are a few distinct symptoms in ear infections like; ear pain, hearing inability, ringing sound in the ear, fullness in the ear, discharge from the ear, vomiting, vertigo, and nausea. All these symptoms can be very irritating and painful and therefore one would seek an answer for ‘how to get rid of an ear infection.’

There are various home remedies that provide temporary relief for ear infection. However, it is always advisable to visit a doctor to correctly assess the level of infection. Proper medical attention is the best way to get rid of an ear infection. There are certain natural methods that may provide relief. Fill a small cloth pouch (a sock will do fine) with salt. Put this pouch in the microwave for a few seconds, until it is sufficiently warm. Then, place this pouch on a relatively flat surface and place your ear on it. This helps drain the accumulated fluid. Certain natural oils are also useful for ear infections. Add olive or mustard oil with 1-2 cloves of chopped garlic in a double boiler. Boil it until the garlic turns black. This oil can be dropped in the ear. Rubbing tea tree oil on the back of the ear will loosen the mucus. Remember, if it is an external infection or if you suspect the eardrum is punctured it would be advisable to seek medical attention as the use of oils would not help.
