home remedies for styes

An eye stye is one of the many bacterial infections that one can suffer from. A stye is usually formed on the eye lids if there is an obstruction in the glands that produce oils. A stye appears as a small bump on the surface of the skin of the eyelid. It can be uncomfortable and itchy and as you try to rub your eyes, the stye may cause burning and there can be a spread of the infection as well. Though an eye stye does not hamper the vision of a person, it can be uncomfortable and extremely communicable as well.
The staphylococci bacteria are usually responsible for the infection in the eyelids and the subsequent inflammation of the lids. The basic symptoms are the presence of a red inflamed bump, sensitivity to light, constant itching and tearing of the eyes, and rawness as well as chafing when the swollen eye is blinked.

There are several simple home remedies for styes which can help in treating the inflammation quickly. Here are some of these common home remedies for eye stye treatment:

  • Use a cotton pad soaked in warm water to clean your eyes several times a day. This can help get rid of the material clogging the skin pores on the eye lids. This will also help in bringing the stye to a head so that the it can drain naturally.
  • Add a teaspoon of coriander seeds to a cup of water and bring the water to boil. Once the water begins to boil, remove it from the heat and strain it. Use this water to wash the eyes. Repeat this three to five times a day.
  • If you have herbal tea bags, especially lemongrass or chamomile, soak them in water for a few seconds and then place them on your eyes for a few minutes. This will help in washing the infection off and bringing relief to the inflammation in the eyes. You can use either hot or cold water for this. Repeat this several times through the day.
  • Warm a bunch of guava leaves by placing them in boiling water for a few seconds. Wrap these leaves in a damp cloth and then use the cloth as a warm compress over your inflamed eye. This is one of the best home remedies for styes. If you can’t find guava leaves, you can simply use a regular hot compress over the infected eye.
