Our knees are the highest load bearing joints in our body and it usually comes as no surprise when they begin to ache after a hard and long day of work. The knees are made of a complicated joint of bone and cartilage. Since this is a load bearing joint, it also begins to degenerate as we grow older. The bones begin to demineralize whereas the cartilage begins to slowly become stiff. Though there are a number of things that may cause pain in the knees, there are two main causes of knee pain that may arise in these delicate joints. Osteoporosis and arthritis are two conditions which are associated with old age. Both these conditions are characterized by degeneration of the bones and joints. The symptoms of these conditions are more severe if there have been old injuries to the knees as well.
In old age, pain management becomes the only possible remedy for knee pain. Fortunately, there are many home remedies for knee pain that can help alleviate some of the symptoms. Here are some home remedies for knee pain:
- Fenugreek seeds soaked in mustard seed oil are a great remedy for knee pain. Smear these seeds on the knees and allow them to dry for some time. This remedy warms up the knees and increases the blood flow to them, improving lubrication and the health of cartilages.
- If you have been experiencing knee pains relentlessly, it is important to give some attention to your diet as well. Your body needs higher quantities of vitamin D, E and B3. Cod liver oil, peanuts and flaxseed oils are excellent. Glucosamine sulfate and niacinamide are some of the other nutritional supplements that can help in the slowing down of the degeneration of the knees.
- Powder a spoonful of bishop’s weed and consume this with a glass of lukewarm water every morning.
- In warm milk or clarified butter, add wheat flour, castor oil and turmeric powder. Make a mixture of pasty consistency and apply it on the knees to get instant relief from pain.
- Drink lots of water so that your body remains hydrated. When the body is hydrated, the muscles in the joints also remain soft. The cartilaginous tissue retains its elasticity and prevents the bones of the joints from grinding against each other.
- Applying heat on the joints is one of the simplest home remedies for knee pain. Simply use a hot compress around your joint area for 10-12 minutes everyday to get some relief from knee pain.
