The condition of hiccups occurs when the diaphragm contracts many times in a sort of spasm. The contraction is rapid and without warning. It can affect healthy individuals after rapid eating, drinking or laughing. It is also a symptom of a far more complicated and dangerous diseases that involves the nervous system. However, nearly all cases of hiccups are temporary and can be sorted out with some home remedies for hiccups.
One of the common home remedies for hiccups is the consumption of water. This should be done rapidly in short bursts. Another technique of consuming water is to lean the head down and drink small sips of water in that position. A person suffering from hiccups may also benefit from sitting down and taking slow deep breaths. This helps in relaxing the body and would also reduce or eliminate the hiccups completely. One could try gargling with warm salt water as well. Apart from clearing the throat, it can help to stop the hiccups from occurring. A spoon of sugar may also work to stop hiccups. The sugar should not be eaten or swallowed. Instead, the spoon should be sucked on for as long as it takes to dissolve the sugar and ingest it. Finally, one should try and hold their breath until the next hiccup. The held breath is also known to suppress the hiccup.
It is generally not advisable to try to sleep when one is suffering from hiccups. Lying down may induce coughing and even choking.
