Gum disease or gum infection results in severe pain and swelling of the gums. The most common type of gum disease is gingivitis. If not treated in the early stages, this leads to periodontitis. This will eventually lead to bone and tooth loss. Visit your dentist immediately if you are suffering from gum disease, however; you could also try some home remedies for gum disease.

Here are some home remedies for gum disease.

  • Aloe Vera which is well known for its various health benefits is excellent for curing gum disease as well. You can either consume the aloe vera juice or take some aloe vera gel and massage your gums with it.
  • Take the time to floss and brush correctly. Do this for at least three to five minutes, thrice a day. Brush at the gumline because this is where the plaque builds up and gingivitis starts.
  • Eat one raw vegetable a day. This will help to keep gingivitis at bay. Fibrous and hard foods clean and stimulate the gums.
  • Use baking powder to get rid of the bacteria that are responsible for gum disease. Mix it with some water to make a paste and apply it to the gums. This is one of the widely used home remedies for gum diseases.
  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant and helps with gum disease as it helps to repair connective tissue. Eat foods that are rich in Vitamin C – oranges, mango, papaya, red pepper, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and so on.
  • Cranberry juice is also among the home remedies for gum disease. It may help to prevent gum disease by preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth. Buy juice that has no added sugar. Drink at least 4 ounces a day. If you have kidney stones or are on a blood thinner, do consult your doctor before resorting to this remedy.
  • A lemon also helps to treat gum disease. Mix some salt in a teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply this to the infected area. If you suffer from pain in the gums, try drinking lemon juice made with warm water.
  • Gargling with salt water is one of the most well known home remedies for gum disease. It is effective in relieving the pain that accompanies the infection. Mix two teaspoons of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and swish this around in your mouth. Do this twice a day till the pain subsides.
