hematoma after surgery

A hematoma refers to an accumulation of blood at the site of surgery. It is also known as postoperative hematoma. This condition usually occurs due to damage of some kind to the blood vessels which surround the surgery site. Hematomas may occur a few hours following the surgery. Improper after-care could also result in a hematoma. A person would suffer from hematoma after surgery that involves procedures such as c-section, episiotomy, removal of gall bladder, breast enlargement, facelift and other types of cosmetic surgery. Dental surgery may also result in a hematoma.

A hematoma after surgery is accompanied by pain, discoloration of the affected skin and a sensation of pressure in the area. The skin around the surgery site may become bluish or purple. In some cases, there is very little bleeding which may stop on its own. In other cases, however, the hematoma may enlarge and press against the surrounding tissues. This restricts the flow of oxygen to the area, leading to skin damage. It also poses the risk of further complications such as necrosis, separation of the wound and infection. The main cause of hematoma after surgery is a mishap during the surgery. After a surgical procedure, the blood vessels have to be closed before the surgeon can close up the incision. This procedure involves using an electric current to cauterize the blood vessels. This leads to the formation of a clot. In some cases the clot may fall off, causing bleeding of the blood vessels. Thus a collection of blood occurs at the surgery site and surrounding tissues. A hematoma after surgery may also occur due to intake of certain medications before the surgery. These medications may lead to thinning of the blood. Bleeding disorders and high blood pressure may also contribute to the development of a hematoma.

The treatment of a hematoma after surgery will be determined by the severity of the condition. Mild hematomas are known to subside and disappear in a few days time. Severe enlarged hematomas may require surgery to re-open the wound. This allows for drainage of the collected blood. The blood vessels are then clamped down if bleeding still takes place. The pain and discomfort may be alleviated through anti-inflammatory medications. The doctor may also advise the patient to use cold compresses to reduce swelling and hemorrhage. Warm towels or heating pads may also be used to relieve discomfort. If these remedies do not help, it is important to consult a doctor again.
