fishy odor

A “fishy odor” is often used to describe vaginal odor that is a result of an overgrowth of the organisms that are present in a woman’s vagina. This fishy odor is often more noticeable in a woman, after sexual intercourse. Many a times, the fishy odor is accompanied by vaginal discharge as well as irritation or itchiness in the vaginal area. In some women, the fishy odor is transient, that is, it comes and goes, in reaction to the changes in their lives. However, for some women, this could be a constant and persistent problem that often reappears as soon as it disappears. Contrary to the common belief, the fishy odor has nothing really to do with lack of personal hygiene. As mentioned before, the main cause of the fishy odor in women is the bacterial overgrowth in the vagina. However, at times a sexually transmitted disease could also lead to vaginal odor.

This odor could be a very embarrassing problem for any women. Fortunately, there are several easy and safe ways of getting rid of the vaginal fishy odor:
  • When women suffer from fishy vaginal odor, they tend to overdo the cleansing and washing of the area. This can make the odor worse, as it washes away the natural cleansers and lubricants in the vagina, thereby increasing the growth of the odor causing bacteria. Therefore, it is best to wash yourself not more than twice a day.
  • Avoid using scented soaps, tissues, sanitary pads and douches as they can cause the bacteria to multiply faster.
  • Make sure that you wear only cotton panties, till the time that the fishy odor is gone. Though they are more attractive synthetic material could irritate the skin, by trapping heat and moisture in the area, creating a more suitable environment for the bacteria to thrive in. Cotton panties, on the other hand allow the area to breathe and help create an environment that is less suitable to the bacteria. The synthetic underwear could be used, but only on occasions and not regularly.
  • Apple cider vinegar is a great way of curing vaginal infections, as it creates an acidic environment in the vaginal area, making it difficult for the bacteria to survive. Pour a cup of apple cider vinegar to a bathtub filled with water. Allow your body to soak in the water for at least twenty minutes or more.
  • Yogurt works wonders in curing several vaginal infections. You can either eat at least two cups of plain yogurt everyday, or you could apply yogurt directly on to your vagina (with the help of a tampon if necessary) to reduce the excessive bacteria.
In case the fishy odor does not disappear within a week or two, after using the above home remedies, it may be best to consult a doctor, who would prescribe medication or ointments to control the infection.
