delayed menses

Menses is the process where the lining of the uterus is shed along with an unfertilized egg and some blood. This is a normal process that occurs in women who have passed puberty but have not yet reached menopause. The menstrual cycle in a healthy woman ensures that she is capable of conceiving about once every month. The female menstrual cycle is typically 28 days long. However, almost all women experience variable menstrual cycles. These variations are associated with different factors like the health of the woman and hormonal interactions among others. Most women will be able to estimate their normal cycle duration. During a menstrual cycle, menses occurs which is followed by a process of the uterus wall thickening. In the middle of the cycle, a mature egg is released from one of the ovaries and passes into the fallopian tubes. This mature egg awaits fertilization by the sperm from a man. If this happens, the egg implants itself in the thick uterus wall. If this fails, the egg is discarded along with the uterus lining in the next menstrual cycle. The functioning of the menstrual cycle is governed by many different hormones including estrogen, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone and progesterone.

Menses is supposed to happen at the same time during every cycle. A new cycle begins with menses. Even though there are variations, most women will have a set period during which they expect to be menstruating. If there is a complication with their reproductive system then this can cause delayed menses. Stress is a factor that can affect hormone production and distribution. Women who are under stress, particularly those who are facing a new source of stress, may be vulnerable to sudden changes in their menstrual cycle. This is because the hormone levels in the body change in response to stress. This affects the rate of metabolism as well. Dietary habits are known to affect menstruation as well. A woman suffering from digestive problems may have a delayed or advanced menses.

Pregnancy occurs when the egg gets fertilized by a sperm. If this has happened, the woman will obviously not have her next menstrual period because the body will be hosting a fertilized egg which is growing into a fetus. A woman who has been sexually active and has missed her period for more than 2 weeks should take a pregnancy test to check if she is pregnant. If repeated testing is negative, then she must visit a doctor for an analysis of the underlying cause of her delayed menses.
