dark toenails
Dark toenails could be the result of fungal infections and therefore proper hygiene and care is important. Toenail fungus could lead to thickened and brittle nails. The shape of the toenails may also change and in many cases, pain and discomfort may also be felt. The fungal infection could also lead to flaking and scaling of the skin around the affected toenails. In some cases, dark toenails may also have yellowish or white patches on them.
There could be other causes of dark toenails as well. Poor hygiene of the nails could lead to discoloration. The feet are always exposed to dirt and dust. Pollution and germs from the ground may also quickly stick to the feet. The area beneath the toenails may accumulate a lot of dirt and if one does not maintain good hygiene, discoloration is likely to occur. In such cases, it is necessary to wash the feet regularly. One must also clean the area under the toenails properly. Injury to the toe could also cause a discoloration of the toenails, especially if there has been bleeding. Dark toenails often occur when the blood coagulates beneath the nails. This does not indicate a serious injury in all cases. If there is a great deal of pain, then it is better to have the toe examined by a doctor. Adequate rest and cleanliness of the feet will ensure that the injury heals well and quickly. It also helps to prevent further infection.
Dark toenails due to fungal infections may be treated by soaking the feet in a solution of water and vinegar. Also trim the toenails regularly in order to prevent germs and dirt from accumulating. Infections may also be treated by applying some tea tree oil or lavender oil to the affected toes with the help of a cotton ball. It is also important to insist on sterilized instruments whenever you get a pedicure or manicure done. Margosa leaves have antibacterial properties and hence would help to reduce infection. Crush some dried margosa leaves into a powder. Add a small amount of water to form a paste and then apply it on the affected toenails. Do not leave the condition untreated as it would only worsen the already existing problem. Pus formation, redness and swelling could also occur if treatment is not administered. In order to prevent fungal infections, wear comfortable shoes that fit well and change the socks regularly to prevent infection.
