cyst

A cyst is a sac that can form both on the skin and anywhere within the body on various organs. Cysts can contain a variety of different mixtures of air and liquids. A cyst does not contain pus as that type of sac is classified as an abscess. Cysts are generally harmless and are a result of some abnormality that is not considered to be very serious. Some cysts may be harmful and may affect the normal functioning of organs on which they are present. Many other types of cysts will have no effect on the life of an individual. The cause of cysts is not completely clear. Some cysts are formed when an area is infected while others are related to defective genetic material.

Cysts are usually only treated when they produce some symptoms. The most common symptom of a cyst is pain. This pain is a result of the cyst pressing against and organ, the skin or a muscle. This may result in pain being felt.

A cyst is named after the area in which it occurs. it is also possible for multiple cysts to form in an area, particularly if there is a specific condition affecting the individual. Many women suffer from a condition known as polycystic ovarian disorder (or syndrome). In this condition, the ovaries of the affected woman have cysts growing on them. This affects their normal functioning and can result in abnormal menstrual cycles. PCOD can also cause temporary or permanent infertility. The variable schedule for menstruation makes it difficult for conception to take place.

Certain cysts are associated with lifestyle problems. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle or one who is constantly riding or driving may suffer from cysts near the tailbone. This is because of the constant pressure being applied on the tailbone area which may cause hairs to grow inwards.

Each type of cyst is caused by a different condition. While some cysts, as explained above, may be lifestyle related, others are a result of the genetic makeup of an individual. This means that treatment options are variable depending on the type and location of the cyst. Many cysts are dealt with using surgical options such as lancing. This technique is most commonly used on surface cysts. If a cyst is suspected to be cancerous, it may be examined using a biopsy sample. Many cysts are left to sort themselves out if there are no overt symptoms reported by the patient.
