corn removal

A corn is the accumulation of dead skin cells that form as a thick and hard area on the foot. Usually a corn takes the shape of a cone, pressing down on the nerves below the skin, causing pain. It can be very painful if not treated in time.

Corns are mostly found on the toes. Those formed between the toes are known as soft corns and those formed on the back, front, or on the top of the toe are known as hard corns. Corns are usually a result of friction caused by ill-fitting shoes.

Corn Removal
Since a corn is formed due to pressure or friction, it is important to reduce the pressure on the corn by changing your footwear with a better, looser fit or keeping a soft pad above the corn to reduce the pressure. You can also soak your foot in hot water containing Epsom salts or corn plasters or apply a cream which will soften the dead skin. You could also try removing the corn by rubbing a pumice stone once the dead skin becomes soft.

However, one should keep in mind that these corn removal strategies do not work for the long term. The corn will be formed again unless you reduce the pressure or friction on that part. If a corn becomes infected, you should consult a doctor immediately and not try removing it on your own. A piece of pineapple placed above the corn overnight will reduce the pain and also quicken the healing.

Soft corns are best treated by the doctors instead of relying on home remedies. In any case, it is not recommended to go for any corn removal option before consulting a doctor. For temporary relief you can use some ointment or pad to reduce the pain and discomfort. But the removal of the corn should be done by the doctor or under the guidance of a physician. Avoid removing the corn with unprescribed ointments or creams which can damage the skin.

Make sure you wear shoes that fit you properly. Do not wear shoes that are too tight or too loose. If you are on your feet the whole day, you should consider using shock absorbing inserts that will reduce the pressure around that area. Also avoid wearing tight nylon socks which do not allow any air circulation to the feet. If you find any pus or infection around the area, it is best to consult a doctor for corn removal.
