chafing
Chafing occurs when there is irritation to the skin as a result of repeated friction. This takes place commonly in both men and women. The areas of the body that are most likely to be affected include the groin, thighs and armpits. When the outer layer of the skin rubs against other parts of the skin or against the clothes, chafing occurs. Overweight individuals are more prone to chafing as there is more contact of the skin with other parts of the body. Athletes may also commonly experience this problem as a result of repeated movements. Chafing could also occur due to wearing of synthetic clothes or tight clothing. Those who tend to sweat excessively also often suffer from chafing. Due to chafing, there is also itching and soreness of the skin. The affected areas become red and tender. It is advisable to treat the areas immediately to avoid further complications such as infection. The skin is known to heal in about two or three days. In case of persistent itching and irritation, it is better to seek proper medical treatment. There are several ways to treat chafed skin. You may apply some petroleum jelly to the affected areas for a soothing effect. Dusting some baby powder on the skin helps to absorb moisture and hence prevents itching and friction. It is important to allow the affected areas to have a proper circulation of air. The skin is likely to heal faster when it is kept uncovered. Another treatment for chafing is to apply zinc oxide after cleansing the affected area. You must also wear comfortable cotton clothes and if the groin area has been affected, wear comfortable undergarments as well. Athletes may benefits from application of protective skin cream. Application of aloe vera to the affected areas is also beneficial.
Essential oils such as tea tree oil and lavender oil are known to be effective in treating skin irritations. Another excellent home remedy for chafing is application of cornstarch. This helps to absorb sweat and hence keeps the skin dry. You may also soothe the area by gently massaging it with some rose water. To ease inflammation and tenderness, you can add some powdered oats to a bath of warm water. Soak in this bath for about ten minutes. Pain and soreness can also be treated by applying lemon balm to the chafed skin. In case the skin does not heal or infection occurs, consult a doctor.
