Previously, burning lips were classified as symptoms that may occur in a person suffering from ‘Burning Mouth Syndrome’. Burning mouth syndrome or Glossodynia is a condition where a person experiences a tingling or burning sensation on their lips, tongue or at times the entire mouth. This condition occurs most often with women after menopause. However, recent studies have revealed that there are several cases where the burning sensation is limited to, only the lips. This led to the study of a new symptomatic entity known as ‘Burning Lips’ or ‘Paresthesia’. Moreover, cases of burning lips have been reported by both men and women between 50-70 years of age. Burning lips may begin with a tingling, burning or creeping sensation on the lips. This sensation slowly progresses to numbness or a combination of numbness but with intensified sensations at irregular intervals.

Burning lips is most often related to a diseased, damaged, or an injured sensory nerve. Such severe cases of burning lips may occur as a result of nerve disorder or neuropathy, cranial nerve trauma, stroke or diabetes. The causes, in such cases, depend on the precise location of the sensation. Other cases of burning lips may occur due to sun burn, cold weather, food allergies, oral thrush, heat burn, lip injury, or chemical burn.

This condition in its severe state is frequently chronic in nature; hence, treatment for the same would depend on the cause. Severe conditions require medical attendance. However, some immediate home remedies that you could use when the tingling sensation occurs, is sip on cold or room temperature water. You could, also, gently dab an ice pack on the affected areas. This would help soothe the burning sensation. Honey has proven to be an excellent soothing agent, as well. In some cases, where burning lips are a result of sun burn, using aloe, lavender oil, yoghurt salve, or a green tea compress is helpful. Another pain relieving method would be to make a paste from a slice of papaya and apply it to the affected areas for 15 minutes. You should ensure there is a sufficient amount of vitamin B, zinc, and iron in your daily diet. A person suffering from burning lips should also take care to avoid certain products; for instance, mouthwashes that have alcohol as an active ingredient. Foods that are salty, sharp, crunchy, or spicy should be avoided. Avoid consuming citrus fruits, like lemon or orange, as they may cause a stinging sensation if they touch the affected areas. Also, smoking, chewing mint or cinnamon would increase the burning sensation.
