brown spots on bottom of foot

Brown spots on the bottom of foot are usually a sign of hyperpigmentation, a condition in which the melanocytes on the skin begin to overproduce the coloring pigment known as melanin. This usually happens when the soles of the feet are over exposed to the sunlight. Propping your feet up and exposing the soles to the harmful ultraviolet rays is the most common cause of hyperpigmentation. However, it must be understood that it most cases, this hyperpigmentation is nothing to worry about.

However, in some cases, such brown spots on the bottom of the foot could be an indication of insulin spill in the body. Though usually the effects of insulin spill are seen only in the area of the neck and chest region, there is a possibility the excessive levels of insulin might manifest themselves in this form as well. If you observe brown spots on the bottom of your foot, you should consult a dermatologist immediately and find out the real problem behind the brown spots. The dermatologist will give you some blood tests and scans after which a more definitive diagnosis may be made.

Some of the other possible causes of hyperpigmentation would include hormonal imbalances, dramatic changes in the diet, liver spots and scarring due to injuries. The melanocytes produce melanin to protect the body from the sun. If you expose yourself to the sun a lot, you get tanned. This is because to protect the skin, the melanocytes produce more melanin, the coloring pigment, which is then absorbed into the skin to create a brown hue. The more the sun exposure, the more melanin is produced and the more colored the skin becomes.

While melanin would usually prevent damage from sun exposure, it has been seen that if the sun exposure is prolonged, the ultraviolet rays may pass through the barrier of melanin and damage the skin as well as the DNA. In some areas of the skin, a condition known as melanogenesis may occur, which is effectively an overspill of melanin which permanently darkens some parts of the skin. Brown spots on the bottom of the foot may also be caused by this melanogenesis.
Our foot consists of many layers of dead skin which need to be scrubbed and scraped off on a regular basis. A solution of salicylic acid would gently remove the dead layers of the skin exposing fresh, young skin underneath. Washing your feet with a lukewarm solution of salicylic acid every day, would help in improving the texture of your skin as well as in getting rid of the brown spots on the bottom of the foot.
