bloating

Bloating is the swelling of the abdominal area accompanied by an increase in its diameter. When there is bloating, a person may feel that the stomach is tight and full. He or she may also feel pain in the stomach. Bloating causes sharp pains which can be felt in the stomach and these pains may often move to the left side of the chest or to the right and are often confused with heart pains and problems in the appendix and gall bladder.

The most common causes for bloating are the buildup of liquids and intestinal gas. Normally, this gas is released through burping or flatulence, but the addition of too much gas causes bloating. The factors that lead to bloating are the intake of fatty foods, inadequate consumption of water, stress, smoking, excess consumption of dairy products, food allergies, overeating, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and other abdominal disorders. The other reasons for bloating can be eating too fast and poor elimination of the gases that build up gas in the stomach.

The symptoms of bloating could include pain in the stomach, chest pain, diarrhea, vomiting, darkened stools, difficulty in burping and swallowing, indigestion, stomach discomfort, fatigue, and breathing problems. These can cause the protective lining of the stomach to break down.

There are many ways to treat bloating. The first step is to begin by drinking plenty of water and eating food rich in fiber such as green leafy vegetables and fruits that will eliminate the unwanted material from the stomach. Soak one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight and drink the strained water in the morning. This can be done every day to avoid bloating and also helps in proper digestion of food. This also helps in healing the protective lining of the stomach. Drinking plenty of buttermilk will also help in fighting bloating.

Start consuming a healthy diet by avoiding foods that produce gas such as beans, milk products, celery, apricots, Brussels sprouts, and other troublesome foods. Avoid drinking carbonated beverages. Eat and drink slowly as eating and drinking fast can cause more air to be swallowed, resulting in bloating. Avoid heavy meals and bending over after eating to prevent reflux from happening.

There are also many over-the-counter medications available to treat bloating. They usually contain certain food enzymes that help in breaking down the sugars found in vegetables and grains. The most commonly used medicines are antacids. These medicines do not have a direct effect on the gas but help the gas build-up to be eliminated through belching.

The cessation of smoking and usage of tobacco products will also prevent bloating. Eating healthy and exercising will also help in preventing bloating.
