black toenail

A black toenail refers to a toenail that has turned either black or blackish-blue in color. Over a period of time you may notice a black toenail, especially if you run or walk on a regular basis. At times, a black toenail is also accompanied by swelling under the nail. You could suffer from a black toenail even because of walking as when you walk there are times when your foot slides forward, within your shoe and your toes brush against the top, the sides and the front of the shoe, with every step you take. This also occurs if your feet swell while you run or walk. The impact and the pressure of the shoe can cause damage to the toenail and can form a blister under it. When a blister is formed, the presence of extra fluid and blood cause the nail to separate from the nail bed. The blood in the area, colors the nail black, giving it the appearance of a black toenail. Although it is more common to see regular runners with a black toenail, it could affect just about anyone. A black toenail is definitely not a pretty sight and to make matters worse, it can also be painful at times. There are some women who avoid wearing open shoes and sandals, because of a black toenail.

However, a black toenail need not be a permanent or a serious condition. A doctor can make a tiny hole, on the nail to drain out the blood and excess fluid. Once the blood has been drained out, the nail should be gradually restored to its original color. In some cases, a doctor may recommend the total removal of a black toenail. However, since this is not a permanent nail removal procedure, the new toenail should grow back, within the next four to six months.

It is better to prevent the occurrence of a black toenail, by choosing your shoes very carefully. Incase a form of exercise like walking, running, jogging, playing soccer or any other sport is a regular part of your daily routine, it is important for you to wear the right foot gear. Shoes that are too loose are as harmful as tight fitting shoes, as your foot can move around more in a loose shoe. Therefore, always wear socks while playing sport or working out and make sure that your shoe laces are done up properly, to prevent any slippage.

Very often, a black toenail could also be the result of a toe injury. In such cases, it is important to get medical attention as early as possible.
