black eye

An injury to the area around the eye, related to the face rather than the eye itself, is commonly known as a black eye. This condition is given this name primarily due to the color that the bruise obtains. A black eye occurs as a result of bleeding under the skin, close to the eye. A black eye may, at times, be an indication of a more serious injury like a skull fracture. In most cases, black eyes aren’t something to be extremely alarmed about; however, if there is bleeding in the eye as well this maybe serious and could damage the cornea.

A black eye is most often the result of a powerful blow to the eye. If the nose gets injured due to a powerful impact, this often results in a swelling around both eyes. This happens because the swelling caused by the nasal injury tends to push fluid to the loose tissues in the area around the eyes. Surgical procedures done on the face could also cause a black eye. A condition known as basilar skull fracture also makes the eyes blacken and swell up.

If you notice any bleeding within the colored and white of the eye, experience double vision or blurry vision, dizziness, nausea, severe pain, or bleeding from the nose, visit a doctor immediately as these may be symptoms of other more serious injuries. The best way to effectively treat a black eye with home remedies is to immediately apply a cold compress to the affected area. Use ice cubes, chilled bag of vegetables or cold meat to cool the area. Continue the application of cold packs for at least 24 to 48 hours after the injury. The cold compress serves to reduce the swelling and constricts the blood vessels, thus, reducing internal bleeding. After 48 hours, you can then switch to a warm compress. Clean cotton swabs should be dipped in warm and used to bathe the affected area around the eye.

Some experts are of the opinion that consuming fruits like papaya and pineapple also help with healing dark circles. Pads of witch hazel are also good for black eyes. These should be left on throughout the night for it to rapidly reduce the dark color surrounding the eyes. A tiny teaspoon of cayenne pepper mixed with around five teaspoons of petroleum jelly can also be applied to the affected areas surrounding the eye. This should be applied at least three times a day. Most importantly, stay away from aspirin, since it could cause adverse effects.
