Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) method is used when there is problem in the female fallopian tubes.  The sperm and the eggs are fertilized externally and are then placed in the fallopian tube for the further development.

This is a combination of GIFT and in vitro fertilization.  The woman is first given drugs which help her to produce more eggs; these mature eggs are then collected. After collecting the eggs they are fertilized externally by mixing the sperm and the eggs in the fluid.

The fertilized eggs are then placed into the female fallopian tube with the help of laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is a technique in which a small incision is made below the naval and through this incision a tube is inserted and the fertilized egg is placed into the fallopian tube.  At least one of the fallopian tubes should be working properly in woman for the process to succeed.  It takes about 5 weeks on an average to complete the cycle of Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT). Woman can go for pregnancy test to check out the progress.

Women suffering from ectopic pregnancies or problems related to fallopian tubes must never go for it. Males who have low sperm count find it an effective technique to get a child. The major controversy related to Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) is that of sex determination. The couples may use this technique to determine the sex of their child.

One of the major drawbacks of this technique is the multiple births; in about 35% of the cases there are chances of multiple births.  Women even give birth to triplets in some of the cases. The technique is not so popular but if properly done the result is positive.

If you want Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) consult an expert doctor who has good experience. 1
