Virgin coconut oil is referred to as the highest quality of coconut oil. It is made from fresh coconut meat and undergoes minimal processing. Hence it still keeps the aroma and flavor of fresh coconut. Virgin coconut oil has many health benefits when taken regularly in the diet. Three to four tablespoons of virgin coconut oil is the recommended daily intake. The fats that enter our body through the food we consume enter the blood stream and are stored in the body. However, the fat contained in virgin coconut oil is of a different type and is known as medium chain fatty acids. These travel directly to the liver and are then converted into energy for the body functions. As such these are healthy fats that protect against heart disease and are helpful for those who wish to shed excess weight. Intake of virgin coconut oil will also diminish food cravings. Most low fat diets generate intense food cravings as the body is unable to get enough fat for its metabolism. Virgin coconut oil has the advantage of providing the body with adequate fat while at the same time ensuring that this fat does not harm the body.

Coconut oil when taken in the diet is also helpful in encouraging proper digestion. It prevents stomach and digestive tract problems as it protects against bacteria and parasites that cause infections. Virgin coconut oil can be used to fry foods as well. High heat may affect other oils such as olive oil, resulting in oxidative damage. But virgin coconut oil is not affected by heat and as such is a healthy oil for frying foods as well. Virgin coconut oil contains lauric acid, caprylic acid and antimicrobial lipids which help in protecting against bacteria, fungi and viruses. Stomach and other infections are thus prevented. Insulin levels are also regulated by the intake of virgin coconut oil. This helps in keeping the blood sugar levels in check.

There are many ways by which you can include virgin coconut oil in your diet. Spread some coconut oil on a piece of whole wheat bread and spread some honey on top of it. You can even use peanut butter or spread some banana slices on top for added nutrition. Virgin coconut oil can also be added to oatmeal once it is cooked. The oil melts and blends quickly. It can also be used to fry eggs or cook any type of meat or vegetable. Apart from being very nutritious, it also gives an added flavor to the food.
