Under Active Thyroid Symptoms

An under active thyroid is one that does not secrete enough thyroid hormones. This condition is referred to as hypothyroidism. This results in the body’s metabolism slowing down and leads to problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, fatigue, hair loss, dizziness and so on. Hypothyroidism is a life long condition but it is possible to lead a healthy normal life by learning to manage the disease. Thyroxin medication is given to supplement the thyroxin the body needs but cannot produce. There are also some natural remedies that can help this condition. These are given below:-

Underactive Thyroid Natural Remedies

•    It is necessary to change your lifestyle once you have been diagnosed with the disease. Eat a well balanced diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
•    Limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat.
•    Include yellow and dark green vegetables, carrots and eggs as these are very good sources of Vitamin A and help to increase iodine absorption. Certain fish and sea vegetables like nori, kombu, dulse and arame would also help.
•    Spinach, olive oil, sunflower seeds, avocados, almonds all help an under active thyroid.
•    Make the time to exercise regularly. Aerobic cardio exercise is best as is strength training which helps to boost one’s metabolism.
•    Get enough rest and ensure that you get your 8 hours of sleep. This will help combat the fatigue, sluggishness and sleepiness that accompany hypothyroidism.
•    Avoid oily, greasy, sugary food. These foods can give rise to indigestion as there is a decrease in metabolism.
•    Spirulina (blue-green algae) and kelp seaweed are rich in iodine which is needed for the thyroid gland to function properly.
•    Cut down on sodas, tea, coffee and other such stimulants as hypothyroidism causes the adrenal glands to over work. Stopping the above stimulants will help the glands to recharge.
•    Drink 8-12 glasses of water a day as this is necessary for metabolism.
•    Limit and reduce the stress in your life. Practice breathing exercises and meditation.
•    Include more fiber in your diet. This will help to deal with the constipation and digestive problems which are part of the disease.
•    Sunlight is another remedy. Light has a good effect on all endocrine glands. Look towards but not directly into natural sunlight first thing in the morning.
•    Cleansing and herbal treatments are also an option. Some common herbs that can be used are black walnut, bladderwrack, primrose oil, Siberian ginseng, agnus castus and black cohosh.

Thyroid levels need to be monitored carefully and regularly. Do check with you doctor before starting any home remedy for the condition.
