Inability of the males to impregnate his partner is termed as male infertility.  Earlier only women were considered to be responsible for not conceiving a baby but medical advancement proved that the males can also be infertile.

There are various treatments for male infertility; once properly treated males become capable of impregnating their female partner.

Drug therapy, assisted reproduction and surgery are the treatments for male infertility.  Sperm retrieval and washing, in vitro fertilization, electroejaculation are some of the assisted reproduction techniques.  When a male is not able to ejaculate naturally, then externally the nerves are stimulated which in turn helps in ejaculation. In case of sperm retrieval, techniques are employed to get sperm from epididymis or testes.

In sperm washing technique, the most ideal sperm is selected for the fertilization purpose.  In the micro epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) technique, the sperm suitable for fertilizing the egg is fished out by the surgeon. Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA) is another technique, in this technique there is no surgery, the sperm can be collected by using a syringe.  The other technique called Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) collects the sperm by removing a small tissue.

Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are the other techniques. In cases of ICSI the immobile sperm is directly fertilized with the egg by artificial techniques.

In-vitro fertilization is widely used in treating male infertility.  Herein the sperm and the egg are fertilized in the laboratory under proper condition. The embryo which is formed is then transferred to the uterus of the female.

Drugs are also recommended which increases the production of the sperm.  In some cases surgical operation may be done to remove any obstruction which is preventing the production of the sperm

Although treatments for male infertility are available but before adopting any of the technique a doctor’s advice is must.
