Usually, hair loss or baldness is not commonly seen in women. When it gets started in women, they become restless and seek the treatment options. The hair loss in women is categorized as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and traumatic alopecia. There are many causes of female pattern hair loss such as hereditary, traction alopecia, trichotillomania, telogen effluvium and androgenic hair loss. It is accompanied by some other signs of hormonal imbalance such as excess body or facial hair. The hair loss can occur in women after pregnancy and also menopause. Sudden psychological or physical stress can lead to hair loss. This type of hair loss is called as Telogen Effluvium which is usually temporary. Female pattern hair loss is also due to presence of testosterone, a male hormone.

Generally, female pattern hair loss is permanent and requires no treatment if the woman is comfortable with her appearance. You can manage mild to moderate hair thinning with creative hair styling, hairpieces and hair weaving. Depending on the severity, treatment of female pattern hair loss is recommended. It may be use of medication or surgical treatment.

The medication treatment of female pattern hair loss involves the use of minoxidil and oral medications like cyproterone acetate or spironolactone. Minoxidil is a FDA approved product effective for hair loss treatment. Aldactone is another beneficial medicine useful the hair loss after menopause.

If the medication is not effective, surgical therapy is applied which includes flaps, scalp reduction and hair transplant. Hair transplant is an effective treatment of female pattern hair loss. It includes the removal of small plugs of hair from the areas where there is continuous hair growth. These plugs are placed in the balding areas. The procedure should be done by experts and requires multiple sessions. It offers excellent and permanent results.
