Once you have experienced toenail fungus, you will want to find a treatment that works right away.  There are many prescription medications that your doctor can give you to treat severe cases of toenail fungus.  Some of these treatments, however, can cause side effects.  If you are interested in finding a treatment for toenail fungus without visiting your doctor, then here are a few things that you may be able to try at home.

Some mild forms of toenail fungus may be able to be treated with common athletes foot medication.  If you go to your local pharmacy or drugstore, look for treatment such as Lamisil creams or powders that can treat your toenail fungus.  Follow the directions carefully and see if this helps get rid of your infection.

Many people have reported success using common products that you can find at your health food store or at your local grocery store.  In fact, some people have reported some success in treating mild forms of toenail fungus with household bleach.  You will need to file your nail to roughen up the surface and then spread the bleach using a Q-tip over your nail.  If you have any adverse side effects to using bleach, try a different method of treatment.

Tea tree oil is also quite useful in treating many types of infections.  You can find all sorts of tea tree oil products at your local health food store.  These products include concentrated bottles of tea tree oil, as well as lotions, creams and soaps made with tea tree oil extract.  It is not recommended to use tea tree oil without first diluting it. Make a solution in part water and part tea tree oil and apply it to the infected toenail several times a day.

In addition to using these types of treatments, it is also recommended that you disinfect your shoes and wash all of your socks in hot water with bleach.  This can kill any infection left side of your footwear.  It is also a good idea to air out your shoes between use and to wear sandals or flip-flops if you frequent the changing rooms at your local gym.
