Toothache Relief

A toothache has the knack of happening at the worst time: usually when you’re tired, and looking forward to a good night’s sleep. You lie down in bed, and you begin to feel that hurt in your tooth, forcing you to sit up. Unless you do something about it, it’ll probably keep you up all night. The bad news is that if you have a tooth ache, it’s probably already too late, and you’ll have to visit your dentist. The main reason for a toothache is tooth decay, and the pain may mean that the nerve is exposed. The good news is that there are home remedies that will ease the pain, and at the very least, give you a good night’s sleep.

Home Remedies:
• One of the best treatments for a toothache is a simple pod of clove. In Ayurvedic medicine, cloves are used as painkillers in dental emergencies. You can take a clove or two and suck on them for a while. Alternatively, you may also apply a drop of warm clove oil on the toothache, which acts as a mild anesthetic. This home remedy is easily available in most households, and should do the trick.

• You can place a hot tea bag on the affected tooth, and lightly press down on it. The tannin in the tea bags will help to relieve the ache.

• A few drops of vanilla extract on the hurting tooth will provide some relief from the pain.

• Gargling with a glass of salty water after dinner will kill some of the bacteria that cause the pain, making the toothache more bearable

• Wheat grass juice also has anti-bacterial properties, which will help keep the pain at bay.

• Grind a little asafoetida, mixed with lemon juice. Heat this mixture, and soak a little cotton on the affected area. You can softly bite down on it, or just leave it as it is if the pain is too much. This should quickly relieve the pain.

• Put an ice cube on the outside of the mouth, around the affected area. This should numb the area and give you some temporary relief.

Keep in mind that if you let a toothache go unchecked, it will only grow, and you will eventually have to get the tooth extracted. If you visit a dentist in time, you may only need a filling for the cavity. Good dental hygiene is essential to prevent toothaches, and it is very important to follow what your parents said: brush twice a day and floss before bed!
