The pain where the ribs and the breastbone meet is associated with costochondritis; although both the Tietze’s syndrome and costochondritis are considered to be the same but some medical experts try to differentiate between the two.

Costochondritis is generally not associated with the swelling but in Tietze’s syndrome swelling is there. Swelling of the ribs and the area near the breastbone is associated with it.  The other symptoms are the same as that of costochondritis. Some experts differ with it as they argue that swelling might be attributed to several other reasons.

The pain is milder to severe in Tietze’s syndrome and is present in the chest area. Tietze’s syndrome can occur due to several reasons. Overuse of the body is considered to be the most common reason; those who exercise heavily are also prone to the disease.

There are certain symptoms which can help you to figure out whether you are suffering from the disease or not.  Pain in the chest is considered to be the most important indication but sometimes the pain can be due to several other factors such as heart disease or viral or fungal infections. If you feel pain in the chest while breathing or coughing then this is an indication that you are suffering from the disease.

There are anti-inflammatory drugs which can be used to reduce the pain.  Rest is considered to be the best way of reducing the pain.  Relax and provide proper rest to the upper portion of your body.  Application of heat packs on the painful area can also provide some relief.  However, if all these procedure does not seem effective then better see a doctor.  The doctor may provide medications depending on the body conditions; if the pain is severe he may also give cortisone injections.

If you adopt a healthy lifestyle and provide proper relaxation to the affected part then you will recover quickly.
