Dandruff is an embarrassing problem that most people experience at least once in their life. Dandruff is a very common scalp problem that causes white flaking skin that shows up on the hair and on the clothes you wear. Some cases of dandruff are quite easy to treat, while others are much more stubborn. Here is a quick look at the causes of dandruff.

Not washing hair properly:
One of the most common causes of dandruff is caused by not washing the hair and scalp properly. This is especially true in children and teens that rush through their daily cleaning routine. If you fail to scrub the scalp during each wash or do not get all of the shampoo out of your hair, it will certainly cause problems with dandruff. Many times, this type of dandruff is easy to treat with a good washing.

Seborrheic dermatitis:
A fungus that lives on the scalp could cause this type of dandruff. The fungus feeds on the dead skin cells and skin oil. It can cause your scalp to itch and can cause flaking that shows up easily in your hair and on your dark colored clothing. This type of dandruff may be harder to treat and may require a medicated or extra-strength shampoo.

Allergies & Styling products:
Allergies can also cause dandruff. If you use a variety of styling products, you may actually have an allergic reaction to the fragrance or other chemicals in the product. The wrong kind of shampoo could cause an allergic reaction and could cause itching and flaking. If you have dandruff caused by allergies or styling products, switch to new products to see if it helps.

When you have dandruff it is always better if you try to pin point a reason. This will help you find the appropriate treatment for your condition.
