Tea Tree Oil for Toenail Fungus:

Toenail fungus is not a serious condition in itself, but if it is left untreated, it can cause other more serious skin conditions. Toenail fungus makes the nails discolored, brittle, flaky, and foul smelling. To top that, toe nail fungus also causes pain while walking and moving about.

For people who suffer from toenail fungus, tea tree oil is nothing short of a miracle cure. For years, this healing oil has been used to treat fungal infections in the toe nails. One of the best possible home remedies for fungal infection of the toenails, tea tree oil remains popular with people who have suffered from this condition at some point or another.

The tea tree or Melaleuca alternifolia was first known for its bactericidal properties in Australia. The oil kills off fungi, viruses, bacteria and even yeast. Today the effects of the oil are so well known that it is quite easily available in pharmacies. Sometimes, tea tree oil comes mixed with other essential oils or chemicals that are considered to be effective antifungal agents. Dimethyl Sulfoxide, apple cider vinegar, iodine, and vaseline are some other agents that have been proven to be effective when used with tea tree oil. However, unlike tea tree oil which has been extensively studied, there are no scientific studies that can back the claims of these other substances.

You should make sure that you keep your feet as dry as possible since fungus requires moisture to survive. Dry your feet well after you shower and if necessary, use a blow dryer to ensure that your feet and toenails are completely dry. It is important though to consult your doctor before you start self treatment. Go to a doctor and obtain an official diagnosis before you begin to use tea tree oil for toe nail fungus. If the fungus has spread, the doctor may also suggest prescription drugs.

Toenail fungus can not only discolor your toe nails but also cause physical deformity in toes. The doctor may even tell you that what you think is toe nail fungus is in fact something else. Therefore it is important that you consult a doctor. The doctor might ask you for a sample of your toe nails for laboratory testing. If the test confirms that you do have toe nail fungus, discuss all your options with your doctor. Suggest the use of tea tree oil and see what your doctor has to say about that. Your doctor may also suggest other ways to use the oil.
