Menopause Signs and Diet:
Menopause is a phase that every woman goes through in which there is a permanent cessation in menstruation. Various symptoms accompany the onset of menopause. Hormonal changes in the body lead to menopause. At the time of menopause, there is a reduction in the quantity of functional eggs in the ovaries. A hormone known as follicle stimulating hormone stimulates the growth of the eggs. When menopause approaches, the eggs stop reacting to the hormone, and as such the estrogen production is drastically decreased. Estrogen plays an important role in the functions of several components of the body such as the uterus, heart, bones, blood vessels, skin, urinary tract and brain. The sudden absence of estrogen production is thought to be the cause of the accompanying symptoms of menopause. During menopause, the ovaries also reduce their production of testosterone, which plays a part in sexual drive.
One of the symptoms of menopause is hot flashes which are essentially sensations of warmth that spread across the body and last for about one minute. The skin also becomes flushed and the body starts sweating. There may also be accompanying palpitations. These hot flashes may result in a rise in the body temperature and heart rate, and can also cause disruptions in sleep. Another symptom is a burning sensation while urinating. The lining of the vagina is affected by the estrogen and as such there may also be pain during sexual intercourse. The shape of the breasts may also undergo a change. Bone loss is a common symptom that occurs during menopause, and this can lead to osteoporosis. Weight gain may occur due to the hormonal changes.
During menopause, it is best to avoid spicy foods. Alcohol and caffeine intake must also be restricted. The diet must be regulated so that there is consumption of foods that are low in fat and cholesterol. Exercising regularly will help to maintain body weight. Bone loss can be avoided by the intake of calcium rich foods such as beans, milk and peas. It is important to drink plenty of water and fluids such as fruit juice as there is a tendency of the vagina to become dry. Soy based food help to increase estrogen production in the body. Sunflower seeds and licorice also help in this regard. Drinking a glass of beet juice a couple of times a day also helps during menopause. Carrot juice may also be consumed to alleviate the effects of menopausal symptoms.
