Gout is not painful in the initial stages. In the beginning, the patient will not experience any symptoms of gout (gouty arthritis). However, it the pain arises after some time and it continues to grow. In the chronic stages, the symptoms become very severe. The pain will usually arise in the form of an attack. Most of the patients describe the pain as crushing excruciating, or throbbing. The pain is unbearable and it becomes very necessary that some thing be done in order other relieve the patient.
Gout can affect one or more joints. Therefore, the symptoms of gout (gouty arthritis) can occur in more than one joint. In chronic gout, the patient will experience recurring attacks of severe pain in such affected joints. These occur due to increase in inflammation in the joints. Due to great increase in inflammation the patient, will experience warmth in the affected joints. The skin and tissues above around the joints will become red.
After sometime, the joints will show tenderness and in such a condition, any movement through them will be very painful. Thus, the patient is virtually the affected joints become handicapped. However, the symptoms of gout (gouty arthritis) i.e. pain redness and tenderness will go away after some days. Then again, they arise all of a sudden in the form of an attack. This cycle of coming and going of attacks will continue.
Each time the attack comes some damage occurs to the joints. If nothing is done, and such attacks keep on coming and going the joint may be severely damaged. The joint may become deformed. One of the important symptoms of gout (gouty arthritis) is the development of Tophi. Tophi are the aggregate masses of uric acid deposits in the cartilages in the joints. Such deposition in the cartilages damages them permanently. The cartilages may deteriorate. As cartilages are as important parts of joints as the bones are any damage to them will be major damage to the whole joint.
