Croup Infection
Croup refers to an infection caused by a virus that affects mostly infants and young children. It causes an inflammation of the larynx, bronchi and trachea, and in adults is known as laryngitis. The child population is more seriously affected as their air passages are small and are hence more susceptible to this condition. The influenza virus is a common culprit, but it may also be caused by a foreign body lodged in the air passage or even a calcium deficiency that may result in a spasm in the vocal chords.
Symptoms of Croup
One of the symptoms of croup is a high pitched cough like a seal’s bark every time the affected person draws in breath. The other symptoms include a barely visible swelling on the outer portion of the throat that may be painful if pressed, difficulty in breathing, taking short, sharp breaths accompanied by a quickened pulse, trouble in swallowing and fever. The face may seem puffy and acquire a reddish tinge. If these symptoms worsen and the child starts developing a bluish tinge to the face, fingers or lips. This situation could turn life threatening due to the lack of oxygen and the person should be rushed to the hospital immediately.
Croup Remedies
For mild cases of croup, you may substitute water or juice instead of milk as they are clear liquids that can prevent dehydration if had in small but frequent sips. There are also croup teas that could be fed to the child to provide relief. Mix two teaspoons each of elecampane root, Seneca snake root and sage and put into a pan. Pour two cups of water over the assortment and boil for a while. Then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about half an hour. Take it off the fire and allow it to cool completely. Strain the liquid and consume as and when required. Another popular croup tea can be made from a mixture of one teaspoon each of mullein leaves and passion flower, two teaspoons each of valerian root and wild cherry bark and two cups of boiling water. Put all the herbs in a glass container and top with the water. Let it stay for 30-40 minutes before you strain the mixture and use the liquid when the need arises. A chicken broth containing garlic, thyme, oregano and some pepper will fight the infection and would also soothe the throat. A little exposure to cool night air or mist is highly beneficial as it will release the blockage from the airways, providing enough moisture and humidity to the air passages.
