Symptoms of Appendix

The appendix has no real function in the human body. It is part of the large intestine and is usually three to four inches long. The appendix is housed in the lower part of our abdomen on the right hand side. When the appendix swells, it leads to appendicitis. Sometimes the appendix may even be filled with pus. If this is un-checked the inflammation starts to interfere with a tissue called the peritoneum tissue that lines the inside of the stomach. The appendix may also rupture if it is not treated. This is when it gets very serious and dangerous, because when the pus enters the abdominal cavity it causes peritonitis. This can lead to serious complications and if it is not treated on time, it can be fatal. Both genders are equally susceptible to appendicitis. So far the most effective way found to deal with appendicitis is surgery.

Appendicitis is usually preceded by a pain in the abdomen. In the beginning the source of the pain cannot be pinpointed, but as time passes, it gradually starts to get more and more severe to the right side of the lower abdomen. Some of the other symptoms that may accompany the pain could be indigestion, diarrhea or constipation. Nausea also adds to the feeling of discomfort and the patient may also end up vomiting. One can also expect a fever of about a 100° to 102°f. The person might also get cramps on the right hand side of the abdomen or the lower back. In a situation like this the only way to ease the pain is to lie on your side and fold your knees towards your chest.

In a disorder like this, which is serious in nature, one should always consult a physician. If the appendix ruptures the person must undergo an operation immediately. When the appendix ruptures (resulting in peritonitis), symptoms to look for are severe pain in the lower abdomen and a sudden rise in body temperature. The person’s appearance will also become pale. Sometimes the appendicitis can become chronic. In these cases the pain becomes recurrent and there is a constant feeling of nausea, though it is very mild, and constipation. It is always advisable to visit a doctor as opposed to trying home remedies as this is a very serious condition that can escalate within a very short time span. It is also advisable to avoid pain killers and using laxatives to clear the stomach. Make sure that all daily meals contain plenty of fruits and raw vegetables.
