Symptoms and Causes of Dry Eyes

Our tears act as a protective covering for the eyes. Tears contain mucus, oils, water, proteins and antibodies. Not only do they provide protection against dust particles and germs, but they also provide our eyes with a large number of essential nutrients and help in keeping them moist and wet. When a sufficient amount of tears are not being produced, the resultant condition is referred to as dry eyes. Thus very simply put, a dry eye is a medical condition that is characterized by the drying up of one’s eye. Due a lack of lubrication the eyes become dry and itchy. A person suffering from this condition may experience the sensation of something being stuck in the eye constantly, blurred vision, a constant itching sensation and the affected eye may also turn red. Some of the symptoms of this condition include redness, sensitivity towards light, pain, itching, stinging, burning and discharge from the affected eye.

Dry Eyes Remedies and Treatment

Some of the common causes of dry eyes include the following; environmental factors such as cigarette smoke, air conditioning, dust, heat, wind, hormonal changes, ageing, side effects of certain medications, contacts lenses and autoimmune diseases.  Here are few useful home remedies that can help in treating this condition. One of the most effective treatments for this condition is the application of a warm compress. Warm about 500ml of water, thereafter dip a clean towel in the water and squeeze out the excess water. Now hold the warm towel against the affected eye for a minute or two. Keep repeating this procedure till the water cools. This remedy should be performed two to three times a day till, the condition improves. This condition will help in restoring moisture to your eyes.

Splash the eyes with cold water several times a day; this will also help in alleviating symptoms. Take a break from what ever it is that you are doing, to blink. As ridiculous as this may sound, this is known to be one of the most simplest and effective of all remedies. Blinking helps in the production of tears, which in turn will help in keeping the eyes moist and lubricated. Individuals suffering from this condition need to stay away from cigarettes and alcohol, as these substances will only contribute towards making the condition worse. Incorporate plenty of fluids into your diet. Also ensure that you are consuming an adequate amount of water; a minimum of eight to ten glasses a day is generally recommended.
