Night sweats or hot flashes
Scientifically called sleep hyperhydrosis, night sweats refer to excessive sweating during sleep. The person may also suffer from immense perspiration while awake, which is referred to as hot flashes.
The affliction may occur at any age, but is most common in adults. There can be various causes of night sweats. If the causes are genetic, the ailment is quite harmless, although it causes a lot of discomfort and uneasiness. One of the major causes of night sweats or hot flashes in women is menopause and perimenopause, which involves changes in the levels of reproductive hormones in the body. Pregnant women may also experience night sweats or hot flashes on account of hormonal changes.
The occurrence of night sweats is common in women in the perimenopause and menopause phases of their reproductive cycles. It also causes irritability in women. As there is no concrete cause of hot flashes or night sweats, there is no substantial medical treatment for the same. As such, you may employ certain home remedies to relieve hot flashes or night sweats.
There are many home remedies to alleviate night sweats or hot flashes, some of which are as follows:
• You must not eat spicy foods. These foods interfere with the normal metabolism, cause an inflammation in the digestive tract, and as such, may aggravate the affliction.
• You are advised not to consume complex sugars like fructose, sucrose, and maltose. As such, you must avoid eating candy, chocolate, jam, and jelly.
• You must avoid hot drinks.
• You must not take caffeinated and carbonated drinks like coffee and colas. You may consume green tea as a substitute for other stimulants like tea or coffee.
• You can make minor modifications in your diet and alleviate this bothersome state. You must include a lot of fruits and vegetables in your diet to supplement the body with adequate nutrition in this state. The foods that must be included in your diet are pumpkin, banana, melon, figs, salmon, apricot, potatoes, sunflower and flax seeds, broccoli, pepper, and spinach.
• You must drink plenty of water to relieve the affliction.
• You must not consume alcohol. Smoking is also prohibited if you are suffering from hot flashes or night sweats.
You are also advised to take up a regular exercise regimen so as to restore the hormonal balance in your body. You may practice yoga and meditation, which may be instrumental in removing the stress and irritability caused by night sweats or hot flashes. Also, maintaining personal hygiene is crucial in lowering the suffering caused by this affliction.
