Causes of Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can occur due to various causes. It is important to determine the correct cause of the condition so that the right course of treatment can be taken. A common cause of shoulder pain is bursitis of the rotator cuff joint in the shoulder. Bursitis refers to inflammation of the bursae, which are fluid filled pockets that prevent friction between the tissues. Tendonitis of the rotator cuff can also result in shoulder pain. Sometimes the tendons of the shoulder joint can tear away from the bone and cause intense pain. Another common condition of the shoulder is frozen shoulder or adhesive capsuliitis in which there is stiffness of the joint. Calcific tendonitis is a condition in which deposits of calcium occur in the tendons. Injury to the shoulder joint can result in instability in which the joint becomes loose. Dislocation can occur when the arm bone and scapula disconnect. Shoulder separation can result when there the acromioclavicular joint becomes affected. Arthritis can also affect the shoulder joint resulting in pain and swelling.
Treatment and Home Remedies For Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain must be first treated with an ice compress. This can be done for fifteen minutes and then repeated after fifteen minutes. It is important not to apply ice directly to the skin. Cover the ice in a cloth and place on the affected area. You can also apply an herbal balm to alleviate the pain and discomfort. The shoulder must also be rested and no strenuous movements must be done for a few days after the pain begins. Once the swelling and pain goes down, light shoulder exercises can be performed to bring strength back in the muscles. Maintaining a posture while sleeping in which the shoulders are elevated above the levels of the heart will also help to quicken the healing. You can do this by placing a pillow under the shoulders to support them.
Once you have determined the cause and treatment for it has begun, there are a few home remedies you can try out to obtain relief from pain and stiffness. Crushed mint leaves may be applied to the affected area. This will bring about a soothing effect and alleviate the pain. Massaging the area with lavender oil or tea tree oil will also help to relieve the condition. In case of bursitis, a cloth soaked in mullein tea may be applied to the shoulder area. Lobelia oil is also beneficial in easing inflamed joints.
